Ground transportation at a US airport is no longer just "taxi or rental car." Every top-50 airport now operates a layered system: rideshare with a designated pickup zone (often offsite from the terminal), a consolidated rental car facility reachable by people mover or shuttle, public transit ranging from a free silver-line bus to a dedicated commuter rail station, and a staging area for hotel and parking shuttles. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft)
Rideshare is the most popular curbside option at every major US airport, but it is not always the fastest. The post-pandemic move to consolidated rideshare lots (LAX-it at LAX, the 24th Street lot at PHX, the Multi-Modal Facility at ORD, the For-Hire Vehicle area at LGA) has added 5 to 25 minutes to the average pickup compared to 2019. Surge pricing during weather events and immediately after large arrival banks can double the typical fare.

Drop-offs are unrestricted at every major US airport's departures curb and not separately charged.
Rental cars
Every top-50 US airport except a small handful (BNA, CLT, RDU, RSW, SLC, MCI, SMF) requires a shuttle ride from the terminal to a Consolidated Rental Car Facility. The shuttle is free; the typical ride is 5 to 12 minutes. People-mover-served facilities (DFW Skylink-adjacent, PHX Sky Train, MIA MIA Mover, BOS Massport) are faster than bus-shuttle facilities (LAX, SAN, MSY, IAH).
Bypass tips: most major chains let you skip the counter entirely if you are an Avis Preferred / Hertz Gold / National Emerald / Enterprise Plus member — the car is in your assigned space when you arrive. National's Emerald Aisle is particularly worth signing up for; a free membership saves 10 to 20 minutes at every pickup.
Public transit
The single best ground-transport upgrade in the last decade has been on-airport rail. The following top-50 airports now have a rapid-transit, commuter-rail, or light-rail station inside or directly adjacent to the terminal:

Where rail is available and your destination is in the urban core, transit almost always beats rideshare on cost (10x cheaper) and frequently on time during rush hour.
Hotel and parking shuttles
Free shuttles from off-airport hotels and off-airport parking lots board at signed curbs outside baggage claim. Each operator runs on its own loop, typically every 10 to 20 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes overnight. If you do not see your hotel's shuttle, call the front desk before assuming you have missed it.
Charter and private car services
Black car, limousine, and charter van services are bookable in advance. Drivers meet passengers in baggage claim with a name placard and assist with luggage. Pricing is fixed at booking. This is the most reliable option for very early morning departures or arrivals when other transportation thins out.
