Travelers passing through San Diego International Airport (SAN) have three categories of hotel to consider: on-airport properties physically attached to or within walking distance of the terminal, near-airport hotels offering frequent free shuttles, and downtown San Diego properties for travelers with a longer layover or a city-side meeting before their next flight.

On-airport hotels

On-airport hotels at SAN typically connect to the terminal via skybridge or short walkway. They are the most expensive option per night but eliminate transit time entirely — useful for very early flights, very late arrivals, or tight overnight connections that don't justify a full hotel stay. Most on-airport properties offer a same-day day-rate for shower-and-rest stays of four to six hours.

Near-airport hotels with shuttles

Within a five-mile radius of SAN you will find a dense cluster of branded hotels operating free 24-hour shuttles to and from the terminal. Brands typically represented include Hyatt Place, Hilton Garden Inn, Marriott Courtyard, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Embassy Suites, and Sheraton Four Points. Shuttle frequency is usually every twenty to thirty minutes during the day and every hour overnight; confirm the schedule with the front desk when you book, especially if you have a flight before 6:00 a.m.

Park-stay-fly packages

Many near-airport properties offer "park-stay-fly" rates that bundle one night's stay with seven, ten, or fourteen days of parking and round-trip shuttle service. These can be a strong value compared with on-airport economy parking for a one-week trip; do the math against the airport's published economy rate before booking.

Day rooms

For long layovers, several airport-area hotels and one or two on-airport providers sell day rooms in four-, six-, or eight-hour blocks. This is a strong option for an eight- to twelve-hour overnight layover where the alternative is sleeping at a gate.

Downtown San Diego hotels

If you have a layover of eight hours or more during the day, it can be worth taking ground transportation to a downtown San Diego hotel — get a meal, take a shower, and rest. Use the ground transportation page to plan the round trip and pad an extra forty-five minutes for return-trip security.

Booking strategies

Airport-area hotel rates fluctuate sharply based on convention and event calendars in San Diego. Booking two to three weeks in advance generally returns the best rates outside of peak event weeks. Loyalty members of major chains often have access to flexible rates that allow same-day cancellation, which is especially valuable when a flight cancellation forces an unplanned overnight.
